What does the spinning color wheel mean on a Mac?

I have the original Leopard OS disc if there is a need for it but I have since upgraded to Maverick online download and have no disc for that. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files. DiskWarrior repaired the hard drive errors that Disk Utility couldn't on my early MBP and it's still running fine today. Backup your files if you haven't already because, you might need to format and install OS X if you don't want to pony up the money for DiskWarrior. Either way may not help you though but, it's worth a try IMO.

Thanks for the tip I have no problem buying a worthwhile software. I think it's worth a shot. So if I loaded the DVD.. I'd just like a little clarification since there is not much info on the site and if I'm going to spend the money, I want to know I'll be able to use it. My problem at the moment is my inability to backup files as the computer shuts down following restart and I can't seem to get into safe mode.

I powered on the MBP and the only way for me to keep it powered on is to do the Command-R process and get into the Utility mode. I had both computers hooked up with an ethernet cable and the migration assistant on the iMac could not find my MBP. The MBP doesn't show up on the desktop or in the network. Same result for the wireless, as I was able to get the MBP connected via airport. Once a target computer is started up as a FireWire hard disk and is available to the host computer, you can copy files to or from that volume.

So the MBP is the target computer and my new iMac is the host, correct? If I can only start up and run my MBP in utility mode, will this still work? MacBooks running OS X Safe Boot also disables any non-critical system processes and allows you to determine if your spinning wheel is the result of a new application causing problems on your system. Hold down the "Shift" key as soon as you start your MacBook.

When the Apple logo appears, you can release the Shift key. Wait for your computer to finish running diagnostic tests and repairing the disk and permissions, if necessary. Then, reboot your computer normally to see if Safe Boot resolved your problem. Hold down "Command-R" until the Apple logo appears. When a list of options appears, launch Disk Utility and open the First Aid tab. In the First Aid tab you can verify and repair disk permissions and verify the hard disk. If the hard disk reports any errors, select the repair option to mark bad sectors of the hard disk and attempt to repair corrupted system files.

Try starting your MacBook in single-user mode to run Terminal commands if you were unable to access Disk Utility. Turn your MacBook on and hold down the "Command-S" keys. The command prompts the computer to conduct five phases of repair and then provides you with statistics on your disk use, fragmentation and whether the utility has altered, repaired or fixed any problems on your computer.
