This is very confusing! We receive the message "Already signed in as xxx hotmail. When I do that using parameters that work successfully with Thunderbird on another computer the Windows 8 Mail App says that the account already exists. However, no such account shows up in the App's Settings, so I can't delete it. The username is the user in that server the text before the ' '.

If you replace that username with the whole email, and you can connect successfully to the account being edited, it should let you add the other account you are trying to add. Yes, that is the problem. Unfortunately, neither IMAP account will allow me to use my full email address as my username.
Seems odd that the Mail App would behave this way, since the two different accounts use different mail servers. Seems like the Mail App should be able to detect that and thus recognize that they are different accounts. Well, this works -- until I reboot my computer. The bogus username that I temporarily changed to on the first account has stuck. I suspect that the system goes through the verification process each time it is rebooted if there are any changes.
On a different issue, but since I "have your ear", it would be nice to be able to change the color highlighting in the Mail App.

Now, going back to the problem of the IMAP accounts, I would like to understand what were the steps you took,. From what I am reading here, seems that you did not change the bogus username of the first account, and you rebooted the machine, is that correct? What I see is that when I change the bogus username of the first account back to the original, it does not "stick. I can change other things, like "Account name" or "Your name", and they stick. Both the new and old accounts seem to work, even when I close the Mail App and reopen it, but not when I reboot.
